The Pond
As we approached the pond, the ground becomes more
"squooshie" (to use Ellie's word). The path winds around and joins
up with a small platform for viewing the birds and other animals around the
pond. According to the guidebook, there are supposed to be a large number of
animals here, including meadow voles, white-footed mice, woodchucks, and
squirrels. However, we don't see any of those.
The bank of the pond does show some evidence of animals that have visited
the waters. There are footprints everywhere. We heard a guide who was
leading a school group say that these are raccoon tracks, but we're not sure.
Ellie drew a picture of the tracks in her notebook so that we could look it up
later.
(Note: Mom gave Ellie the wrong spelling for "raccoon".
Who knew that we'd need a dictionary?!?)
