On Jan 25, 2000, I looked out the front window at
around noon and saw this bird hunched in the corner of the porch.
It was eating something and had its back to me. I watched it for
about 10 minutes and then ran to get my camera. I took quite a few
(admittedly not the best) pictures of it through the windows. As I
did, it kept looking around, turning its back to me (like it was
hiding its food), and ducking behind a snow shovel that was leaning
against the house. I finally sneaked out the door and got a little
closer to take another picture or two. But then it heard me and
flew away. I then looked and saw what it had been eating... the
wing of a smaller bird. (Ick!!)
Since then, I have found that the bird is an American Kestrel (male).
Thanks to my mom, her party of friends, and the folks at the Usenet newsgroup
rec.birds who so quickly identified it!
By the way, since this happened, I've purchased a telephoto lens
for my camera! Hopefully from now on, I'll be able to get better
pictures!!
