What technologies are used on this site?

Where possible, we always recommend using the most recent version of your favorite browser. This includes Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Opera, and WebTV.

HTML 4
DHTML
Some aspects of DHTML are utilized on this site. Unfortunately, because of the inconsistent implementation in browsers, not everyone is going to see the effects. Primarily, DHTML has been used to customize the page output for different browsers or to add roll-over effects. In order to see DHTML effects, your browser must have JavaScript enabled.
CSS
Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is great for maintaining consistent styles throughout the site. In addition, it generally makes the size of the HTML files smaller, which speeds page download times. Again, the implmentation of CSS is inconsistent between browsers, and the implmentation of IE 4 for the Mac is buggy.
Shockwave Flash
Shockwave Flash is used for multimedia games and presentations, primarily in the Kid Stuff section. A plug-in is required for viewing Shockwave Flash.
CGI (for feedback, etc.)
PHP and MySQL
Book data is stored in a MySQL database. The data is accessed and displayed using PHP.
